Updated October 2026

Florence sits in a bowl of hills, and that shapes its weather. Summers are hot and still, winters are cool and damp, and the best months are the ones in between. Here is Florence weather by month, with the official climate averages, how crowded each month feels to me, and what I would pack.

The temperatures and rainfall below are the 1991 to 2020 averages for Florence from LaMMA, the Tuscan regional weather service. Crowd levels are my own view from many trips.

What is the best month to visit Florence for weather?

For me it is May or late September into early October. Days are warm, around 22 to 25°C (72 to 77°F), and evenings are made for walking. April is lovely but can be showery. If you want the city at its quietest, go in January or February and pack for cold.

Those warm May and early autumn evenings are made for a terrace in the countryside, and when I want a villa in the Tuscan hills, I turn to my friends at Exclusive Villa Collection.

Florence weather in winter: December, January, February

Winter highs sit around 11 to 13°C (52 to 55°F), and nights fall close to freezing. Florence averages about 29 frost days a year. It rarely snows in the city, but damp air makes it feel colder than the numbers. The upside is short museum lines and a calm city. December is festive, and I cover it in Christmas in Florence.

Pack a warm coat, a scarf, layers and waterproof shoes.

Florence weather in spring: March, April, May

Spring warms fast, from about 16°C (61°F) in March to 25°C (77°F) by late May. Rain comes in short bursts. Crowds build from Easter on, so book key museums early. I explain why I love this season in why spring and summer are the best times to visit Florence.

Pack layers, a light jacket, an umbrella and comfortable walking shoes.

Florence weather in summer: June, July, August

July and August are the hottest months, with average highs above 32°C (90°F) and very little rain. Florence averages about 24 days a year above 34°C (93°F), and the stone streets hold the heat into the night. Do your walking early, take long lunches and save museums for the afternoon. My tips for beating the crowds in Florence in summer help here.

Pack breathable linen and cotton, a hat, sunscreen and a refillable water bottle. Churches, including the Duomo, ask for covered shoulders and knees, so carry a light scarf.

Florence weather in autumn: September, October, November

September still feels like summer, and October is golden and mild, but autumn is also the rainy season. October averages about 104 mm and November about 118 mm, the wettest month of the year. For events this autumn, see Florence in November 2026.

Pack layers, a waterproof jacket and shoes with grip for wet stone.

What should I pack for Florence?

Whatever the month, bring shoes you can walk in all day on stone, a layer for cool churches and museums, and a compact umbrella from October to April. My full packing guide for Florence and Tuscany by season has the list.
