3 Days in Florence at a Slow Pace: A Relaxed Itinerary

Paved courtyard and arched cloister of Florence’s Basilica of Santa Croce.

Not everyone wants a dawn start and three timed museum slots. This is my slower three-day plan for Florence: one anchor sight a day, long lunches, and plenty of time to wander. It suits families, travelers who prefer a gentler pace, and anyone who would rather soak up the city than tick off a list.

If you want the classic plan that fits the Duomo climb, David and the Uffizi into three days, use my 3 day first-timer's itinerary instead. This page is the relaxed alternative.

How this slow plan works

Pick one booked sight per day and treat everything else as optional. Mornings are for the one thing you most want to see, afternoons are for walking and resting, and evenings are for food. Check official opening hours and ticket rules before you go, since they change.

The ornate marble facade of Florence Cathedral rises against a clear blue sky.

Day 1: The Duomo area at an easy pace

Morning: Breakfast standing at a cafe bar with a cappuccino and a cornetto, then one Duomo complex visit of your choice. Admiring the cathedral facade from the piazza is free.

Afternoon: A long lunch, then a gentle loop of the streets around Piazza della Repubblica and Via de' Tornabuoni.

Evening: Dinner a few streets away from the main squares, then a walk past the lit cathedral.

A bright domed interior in Florence, with a circular skylight above a pale stone arch.

Day 2: Markets, the river and the Oltrarno

Morning: Browse a food market for breakfast and picnic supplies. My Florence food and drink guide has ideas.

Afternoon: Cross the Ponte Vecchio and drift through the Oltrarno toward Santo Spirito, with a gelato stop and time to watch artisans at work.

Evening: An aperitivo in Piazza Santo Spirito and dinner on that side of the river.

Shoppers browse the food stalls inside Mercato Centrale's bright upper-level hall.

Day 3: One museum, then a view

Morning: Choose one museum or church that interests you, such as Santa Croce, and check the official hours and any closure days first.

Afternoon: Revisit a favorite neighborhood without a plan. See my Florence neighborhoods guide for ideas.

Sunset: Head up to Piazzale Michelangelo for the view over the city.

Tips for a slower Florence trip

Rest in the hottest hours in summer. Wear comfortable shoes and carry a light scarf for churches. Keep a buffer on departure day for luggage and getting to the station or airport. Skip stops freely rather than trying to fit everything in.
