The long facade of Palazzo Pitti in Florence

Winter is my favorite season for museums in Florence. The lines are shorter, the light is low and golden, and this year the exhibition calendar is unusually strong. These are the shows I would plan a trip around between now and spring.

Magnifico 1492 at Palazzo Pitti

The big one. The Uffizi Galleries are rebuilding the collection Lorenzo de' Medici kept in the family palace on Via Larga, as it was listed in the inventory made at his death in 1492. More than one hundred works on loan from Italian and international museums, from paintings and sculpture to gems, cameos, coins, manuscripts and maps. The Uffizi has also promised to reunite a major cycle for the show, which Florence listings identify as Paolo Uccello's three Battle of San Romano panels, now split between Florence, London and Paris.

It runs until 1 March 2027 in the Treasury of the Grand Dukes at Palazzo Pitti, which has been closed for maintenance since February 2026. One caution: some listings give an opening date of 30 November and others 3 December, so confirm on uffizi.it before you lock in a visit. Sources: Firenze Made in Tuscany, Firenze Weekend.

Broken at Palazzo Strozzi

Until 24 January 2027, Palazzo Strozzi tells the history of sculpture through what broke: wars, religious reform, the French Revolution and the 1966 Florence flood. More than eighty works and relics, with loans from the Metropolitan Museum, the Louvre and the British Museum, and names from Giovanni Pisano and Michelangelo to Rodin and Louise Bourgeois. Dutch artist Mark Manders has made a large installation for the Renaissance courtyard, which you can see even if you are just passing through. The show was organized with the National Gallery of Art in Washington.

Artemisia Gentileschi at the Museo degli Innocenti

From 21 October 2026 to 4 April 2027, the Innocenti on Piazza Santissima Annunziata follows Artemisia's Florentine years, from her arrival in 1613 to 1620, when she left as an established painter and the first woman admitted to the Accademia delle Arti del Disegno. More than fifty works from over forty lenders, including two Caravaggios. It pairs perfectly with a morning at the Accademia and David, five minutes away.
