Florence Hotels With Duomo Views: Rooms and Rooftops I Recommend

The dome through the grille at the top of Giotto's bell tower

The first evening I spent in Florence, I climbed Giotto's bell tower and watched the dome turn from terracotta to gold to dusky pink. Ever since, the question I hear most from travelers is simple: can I wake up to that view? You can, but only at a handful of hotels, and only if you ask for the right room.

Below are hotels whose official sites confirm a Duomo view, either from rooms or from a rooftop terrace. For more choices across the city, see my 5 star hotels Florence guide and my pick of Florence boutique hotels.

Quick picks

  • Closest to the cathedral: Hotel Duomo Firenze, on Piazza del Duomo itself.

  • Best Duomo suite: Brunelleschi Hotel, with a suite looking at the dome and the bell tower.

  • Best rooftop all year: Grand Hotel Cavour and its Divina Terrazza.

  • Best for dinner with a view: Grand Hotel Baglioni and its B-Roof restaurant.

  • Best for drinks a few steps from the dome: Hotel Calimala and its Angel Roofbar.

Hotels with Duomo view rooms

Hotel Duomo Firenze

On Piazza del Duomo, as close as you can sleep to the cathedral. It has been run by the same family since 1953, and 13 of its 24 rooms look out onto the Duomo. Three of them, rooms 31, 32 and 33, have their own balconies facing the cathedral. Guests also share a panoramic terrace overlooking the dome.

Good to know: this is a three-star hotel with a small lift, and it is not suitable for wheelchair users. Ask for a Duomo-facing room when you book, because not every room has the view.

Brunelleschi Hotel

Address: Piazza Santa Elisabetta 3.

On Piazza Sant'Elisabetta, a small square between the Duomo and Piazza della Repubblica. Part of the hotel is built inside the Pagliazza, one of the oldest towers in the city, with Byzantine origins. Its Deluxe rooms include options with a Duomo view, and the Duomo Suite looks straight at the dome and Giotto's bell tower.

Good to know: the view rooms are a specific category, so request one by name.

Hotels with Duomo view rooftops

If a view room is not available, a rooftop terrace is the next best thing. These also welcome outside guests, so you can enjoy them even if you stay elsewhere. My guide to the best rooftop bars in Florence covers more of them.

Grand Hotel Cavour

On Via del Proconsolo, in a 13th-century palazzo a few minutes' walk from Piazza del Duomo. The Divina Terrazza rooftop bar looks directly at the dome, and it is open all year because the terrace is covered and heated in winter. It is reached by a final staircase, and booking is recommended.

Grand Hotel Baglioni

On Piazza dell'Unità Italiana, two minutes from Santa Maria Novella station. The B-Roof restaurant on the fifth floor has terraces on several levels and windows with a 360-degree view, from Santa Maria Novella to the dome and the tower of Palazzo Vecchio. It serves lunch, dinner and aperitivo, and in summer drinks move out under the pergola.

Hotel Calimala

Address: Via Calimala 2.

On Via dei Lamberti, between Piazza della Repubblica and Piazza della Signoria. Its Angel Roofbar and Dining spreads across rooftop terraces with a view of the Duomo, and it is one of the easiest rooftops to reach from the main sights.

How to get the view you want

  • Book the room category, not the hotel. In most of these hotels only some rooms face the Duomo. If the view matters, confirm the category in writing.

  • Ask about the floor. Higher floors usually see over neighboring roofs. Lower floors can look at a wall.

  • Think about bells and crowds. Rooms on Piazza del Duomo are in the middle of the action. Light sleepers may prefer a rooftop view and a quieter room.

  • Reserve the terrace. Rooftop tables at sunset fill fast in spring and summer.

  • Climb the bell tower too. The best view of the dome is from Giotto's bell tower. See my Florence Duomo guide for how to plan the climbs.

Where to stay near the Duomo

The Duomo area puts you within walking distance of almost everything, from the Uffizi to the Accademia and the Mercato Centrale. The trade-off is busy streets by day. See where to stay near the Duomo for the full picture.

Other ways to see the dome from your bed

Not every view needs a hotel. Some apartments around Piazza del Duomo, Via dei Servi and Borgo degli Albizi have windows or terraces facing the dome, and a few villas in the hills of Fiesole and Bellosguardo look across the whole city to it. For a group or a long stay, a villa with a terrace view of Florence is unforgettable. Browse villas near Florence at Exclusive Villa Collection.

When the view is best

  • Morning: soft light on the dome and empty streets, best from rooms facing south or east.

  • Sunset: the terracotta glows, and rooftop bars are at their busiest.

  • Night: the cathedral is floodlit, and the marble facade shines white.

  • Winter: clearer air and earlier sunsets, so the views come with fewer crowds.

My rooftop routine

When I am in Florence, I like to end a long day with a drink on a rooftop facing the dome. I book a table for 30 minutes before sunset, order something light, and stay until the lights come on. It is the best way I know to feel the scale of Brunelleschi's dome, rising above everything else in the city.

Duomo views without a hotel

  • The top of the dome itself, booked with the Brunelleschi Pass.

  • Giotto's bell tower, the best view of the dome.

  • The terrace of the Opera del Duomo Museum.

  • The tower of Palazzo Vecchio.

  • The rooftop café of the Rinascente department store on Piazza della Repubblica.

  • Piazzale Michelangelo and San Miniato al Monte.

Which side of the dome to see

The Duomo looks different from every direction, and the best view depends on what you want. From the west, around Piazza Santa Maria Novella and Via de' Cerretani, you see the facade and the bell tower together with the dome rising behind. From the south, around Piazza della Repubblica and Via Calzaiuoli, the dome and Giotto's bell tower stand side by side, the classic postcard view. From the north and east, near Via dei Servi and Piazza Santissima Annunziata, you see the apse and the full curve of the dome rising over the rooftops. Hotels on Via dei Servi have the closest views of the dome itself, almost close enough to touch.

Room types and how to ask

Duomo view rooms are usually a limited number in each hotel, and they go first. When I book, I ask for the room category with a guaranteed view, not just "a view on request". I also ask how the dome is seen: from the bed, from a balcony, from a window at an angle or from a shared terrace. A photo taken from the room is the best confirmation. Corner rooms and top floor rooms often have the best views, and some suites have private terraces looking straight at the dome.

Light and the dome through the day

The dome changes color through the day. At sunrise, it glows pink and gold. At midday, the terracotta is bright orange against the blue sky. At sunset, the marble of the bell tower turns warm, and after dark, the cathedral is floodlit and the lantern at the top shines over the city. If you can, choose a room facing west or south toward the dome for the evening light.

Noise and the bells

Staying close to the Duomo means hearing the bells. They ring for services and on the hour from Giotto's bell tower, sometimes early in the morning. I love the sound, but light sleepers should pack earplugs. The piazza is also busy until late in summer, so higher floors are quieter.

Booking ahead

Rooms with Duomo views are in high demand from April to October and around holidays. Book as early as you can, ideally months ahead, and check whether the view room is confirmed in writing.

Duomo views from the countryside

From the hills around the city, in Fiesole, Bellosguardo or the Chianti side, the dome stands above the whole valley. A villa with a view of Florence is a different kind of Duomo view: wide, calm and golden at sunset.

FAQ

Which Florence hotel is closest to the Duomo?

Hotel Duomo Firenze is on Piazza del Duomo itself, with more than half of its rooms looking onto the cathedral.

Can I visit these rooftops without staying at the hotel?

Yes. The Divina Terrazza and Angel Roofbar are open to outside guests, and so is B-Roof in season (it usually closes for the winter after October). Booking ahead is wise at sunset.

Do all rooms in these hotels have a Duomo view?

No. View rooms are a specific category. Ask for one by name and confirm it when you book.

Is a Duomo view room worth it?

For a special trip, I think so. Seeing the dome first thing in the morning and lit up at night is something you remember for years.

What is the best free view of the Duomo?

Piazzale Michelangelo and the steps of San Miniato al Monte, both free and open at any hour.
